Join the Vancouver Short Film Festival team in the role of Festival Director and contribute to the growth of the Canadian independent film community.
The Vancouver Short Film Festival (VSFF) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Festival Director to lead the festival’s overall strategy, management, and operation. As a non-profit organization, the VSFF has supported and celebrated Canada’s short filmmakers, documentarians, and animation artists since its establishment in 2005. The festival aims to elevate local talent, connect filmmakers with audiences, and foster connections between emerging and established filmmakers across the country.
With over 50 films programmed yearly and over $40,000 awarded in cash and prizes to Canada’s best short films, the VSFF has become a prominent platform for independent filmmakers. In 2022, the festival successfully held both online and in-person events, featuring 51 short works from British Columbia and beyond. The 14th Vancouver Short Film Festival is scheduled to take place from May 31 to June 2, 2024, with a combination of in-person and virtual screenings.
The Festival Director will work closely with the VSFF Board of Directors and oversee the festival’s management, year-round programming, and the participation of approximately 15 volunteer staff members. This includes leading the creation of the festival’s overall strategy, planning and executing festival activities, managing administrative work, handling festival finances, seeking funding opportunities, and maintaining effective communication with all festival teams.
Applicants should have at least three years of experience in film festival production, event management, film production, and/or fundraising to be eligible for this position. A demonstrated passion for Vancouver, British Columbia, and Canadian independent film production and exhibition is essential. The ideal candidate should possess strong team leadership and collaboration skills, excellent organizational and prioritization abilities, and effective communication skills. Experience in managing a team and conflict resolution is considered a strong asset.
The Festival Director will be required to commit 5-25 hours per week, with the workload varying depending on the festival’s production phase. While most of the work can be carried out remotely, occasional in-person meetings and events in Vancouver will be necessary. Additionally, the candidate must be present in Vancouver for the duration of the 2024 festival.
In terms of compensation, this position is voluntary, with an honorarium of $500 or 5% of the festival’s net profit, whichever is more. The Festival Director may also request a reference letter from the VSFF Chair.
Applicants interested in this exciting opportunity can apply by emailing their cover letter and resume to apply@vsff.com by September 18, 2023. All inquiries about the position can also be directed to apply@vsff.com. The VSFF appreciates and acknowledges all applicants; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
By joining the Vancouver Short Film Festival as the Festival Director, candidates will have the chance to significantly impact the growth and development of the British Columbia and Canadian independent film community. Additionally, they will contribute to the leadership of a non-profit arts society and have the opportunity to showcase innovative ideas and stay connected with the latest trends and community needs within the festival landscape.
